What is Assimilation?
As you can see from the title of this post I will be discussing What Assimilation is. Incase you don't know what Assimilation is, it's the act of changing aspects of one's identity, including cultural identity, to fit social standards. Now this isn't something that happens in just high school. It happens everywhere. Personally it's so messed up. People shouldn't have to change themselves just to fit in with societies standards. Society should lower their standards or learn to accept people who are different from how they are. Just because someone dresses differently, eats different food, speak a different language, act a different way or have a different skin color than you doesn't mean you need to make them feel embarrassed about it or make them feel like they need to change how they are. Everyone is unique and different and you shouldn't judge them for that.
Imagine if you went to some other country and they didn't know about things that you do. Like how you speak, eat, dress, or act. Would you like it if they judged you on that? No you wouldn't which is exactly why you should judge someone when they do something differently from what your used to. "Assimilation is when your getting rid of what makes you unique, different and special to fit in with the majority norm"- social studies teacher Kathryn-Anne Barney said. Honestly I agree, because when a majority of people say that you're "weird" for doing things that you normally would do at home or in your home town you feel embarrassed and then you try to change yourself to fit in. I myself have changed myself to fit in wit other kids but then as I got older I stopped trying to change to fit in. If people can't accept you for who you are then they are missing out and you will eventually find people who do accept you for how you are. You're unique and you don't need to change to fit in. When you find the right crowd you'll fit in perfectly fine regardless of if they are just like you or different they will accept you.
